Eschscholzia californica plant

Eschscholzia californica (Californian poppy) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A compact, finely divided, blue-green perennial producing silky, golden-orange poppy flowers, valued for its soft, calming visual presence and long flowering season.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Eschscholzia californica forms neat mounds of finely dissected, glaucous foliage that gives the plant a soft, feathery texture. Throughout summer it produces vivid golden to tangerine-orange poppy blooms that close in dull weather and reopen in full sun. Its silky petals and long flowering window make it a striking ornamental with a distinctly Western American desert aesthetic.

Growing conditions: Although native to warmer, arid regions of the Americas, Californian poppy performs surprisingly well in Ireland when given full sun and sharp drainage. It thrives in poor, sandy or stony soils where water moves freely, and it resents heavy, wet ground. Hardy here when established, though winter wet is a bigger threat than temperature. In cooler counties, sowing or planting in spring gives the best results and prolongs the flowering period.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally associated with easing states of overexcitement, restlessness, disturbed sleep, digestive tension, and colicky discomfort.

Maintenance & harvesting: Deadhead regularly to extend flowering, or allow some blooms to set seed if you want natural self-sowing. Avoid rich soils or heavy feeding, which can reduce flower production. Harvest aerial parts when in full bloom, choosing a dry day to prevent mould. Once established, plants are drought-tolerant and require minimal irrigation. In wet winters, mulching with gravel around the crown helps protect it from rot.
