Ephedra plants at Ivywood

Ephedra sinca (Ma Huang) 9 cm Pot

€ 8.00
A slender, jointed, rush-like perennial with wiry green stems and a distinctive ancient desert-plant appearance, valued for its striking form and traditional use.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Ephedra spp. forms low, wiry clumps of thin, segmented, photosynthetic stems in shades of grey-green to yellow-green. Leaves are reduced to tiny scales at the nodes, giving the plant its characteristic broom-like texture. Its minimalist, architectural form and ancient lineage make it visually unlike any other medicinal plant grown in Ireland.

Growing conditions: Half-hardy in Ireland, Ephedra requires the hottest, brightest position available. It must have extremely free-draining, sandy or gritty soil to mimic its native Asian desert and steppe habitats. Young plants should be kept in pots for their first year and protected from sustained rain, winter damp, and strong winds, as excessive moisture is the primary risk in the Irish climate. Overwintering or even growing year round indoors or under cover is advisable to prevent rot.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally associated with supporting respiratory comfort, including symptoms such as wheezing, cough, feverish chills, and common winter colds.

Maintenance & harvesting: Grow Ephedra in deep, gritty containers or a raised bed to avoid waterlogging. Allow the soil to dry between waterings, and ensure excellent air flow around the stems. Protect from heavy rain, especially during colder months, by bringing pots indoors or placing them under cover. Once established, plants are long-lived and require minimal feeding. Harvest aerial material sparingly and only during warm, dry weather to keep stems in good condition.
