Inula helenium potted plant

Inula helenium (Elecampagne) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A tall, dramatic perennial with bold golden-yellow blooms and aromatic roots, long valued for supporting robust respiratory health.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Elecampane forms an impressive clump of broad, downy foliage topped with large, finely fringed golden flowers that rise well above the basal leaves. This statuesque perennial brings a bold architectural presence to the garden, with thick aromatic roots that have a long tradition of use. All plants are propagated from seed in our nursery in Co. Clare and, being fully hardy, adapt very well to Irish conditions.

Growing conditions: Well suited to the Irish climate, Elecampane thrives in full sun and open ground with moisture-retentive but free-draining soil. Although tolerant of poorer ground, it grows best when planted in a bright, sheltered spot with room to expand. As a hardy perennial originating from Europe and Asia, it overwinters reliably outdoors in all regions of Ireland.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally valued as a respiratory herb, Elecampane has been used for supporting the lungs during coughs, congestion, and chronic chest conditions. It is also associated with digestive tonics in traditional herbalism, particularly where warmth and aromatic stimulation are desired.

Maintenance & harvesting: Provide ample space as mature plants become large. Cut back spent growth in winter to tidy and encourage fresh spring shoots. Roots are typically lifted from plants three years or older, selecting mature sections while replanting younger divisions to maintain stock. The plant benefits from mulching in late autumn to conserve soil moisture and support strong root development.
