Growth habit & appearance:Hyssopus officinalis forms a dense, upright mound of woody stems bearing narrow, aromatic leaves and striking violet-blue flower spikes throughout summer. Its resinous fragrance and vivid inflorescences make it visually prominent in borders while still maintaining a compact, structured habit that suits small gardens and herb beds.
Growing conditions:This hardy perennial thrives in full sun to light shade in Ireland and performs best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. As all plants are grown in our nursery in Co. Clare, they are fully acclimatised to Irish conditions and establish reliably once planted out. Hyssop handles coastal exposure and cooler summers well, provided drainage is adequate.
Traditional & herbal uses:Traditionally associated with easing stress and nervous tension, hyssop has also been used for mild depressive states, restlessness, insomnia, and periods of over-excitability. The aromatic flowering tops are valued in teas and preparations.
Maintenance & harvesting:Allow plants to settle for one season before heavy cutting. Harvest aerial parts when in full flower for the strongest aroma. Hyssop benefits from a light trim after flowering to maintain its compact shape and promote fresh growth the following year.
