Growth habit & appearance: Helichrysum italicum forms a compact, evergreen mound of narrow, silver-grey leaves that release a strong resinous aroma when brushed. In summer it produces tight clusters of golden, straw-like flowers that hold their colour when dried, giving the plant a distinctive Mediterranean presence.
Growing conditions: In Ireland this half-hardy perennial requires full sun and extremely free-draining, gritty soil to avoid winter losses. Persistent wet is the main challenge, so raised beds, gravel mounds, or a south-facing wall are ideal to keep the roots dry. Young plants benefit from overwintering in a polytunnel or a sheltered courtyard to protect them from prolonged cold and damp.
Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally associated with soothing inflamed tissues, supporting healthy bile flow, and modulating allergic responses. The aromatic flowering tops have long been valued in Mediterranean herbal traditions.
Maintenance & harvesting: Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a dense, bushy form, avoiding hard pruning into older wood. Keep soil sharply drained and avoid overwatering at any stage. Harvest flower heads when fully coloured for drying, and take small quantities of foliage through the season. Apply a gravel mulch to protect the crown from winter wet.
