Growth habit & appearance: Helianthemum nummularium forms a low, spreading evergreen mat with small, glossy leaves and abundant golden flowers that open in warm weather. Each bloom has a delicate crinkled texture, giving the shrub a sunlit, Mediterranean character despite its compact size. Its flowering display is prolific, with masses of saucer-shaped blossoms that attract pollinators and brighten dry, rocky ground.
Growing conditions: Well suited to Irish gardens, this species thrives in full sun and tolerates poor, stony, or lime-rich soils as long as drainage is excellent. Although native to Europe, it adapts reliably to Ireland’s cool summers, provided the site is not waterlogged. Being evergreen, it holds foliage year-round and benefits from a sheltered, open position for best flowering.
Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally valued as a source of flower remedies, particularly in emotional-calming formulas. The bright petals were historically gathered to prepare supportive essences.
Maintenance & harvesting: Trim lightly after flowering to maintain its mound shape and prevent the centre becoming woody. Avoid hard pruning into old wood. Harvest the flowers fresh on dry days, as they open, for remedy preparation. Ensure the plant is not overshadowed by taller neighbours—sun exposure is essential for continuous flowering.
