Artemisia abrotanum (Southernwood) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A fragrant woody perennial with finely divided silver-green leaves, traditionally valued for supporting digestion, liver function and general aromatic toning.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Artemisia abrotanum is an elegant, airy perennial with finely divided, feathery silver-green foliage that releases a strong, pleasant aroma when brushed. Its slender woody stems create a light, upright form, reaching around 80 cm, while the foliage gives it a soft, cloud-like texture. In late summer it can produce small clusters of yellowish flower heads, though the finely cut aromatic leaves are the plant’s most distinctive feature. The foliage is highly attractive to beneficial insects and adds visual refinement to any herb planting.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy in Ireland, southernwood thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is naturally adapted to dry, open European habitats, making it well suited to brighter, breezy parts of an Irish garden where the soil does not stay waterlogged. Once planted out from its 9 cm pot, it establishes into a loose, shrubby clump. Avoid overly rich or heavy soil, as the plant prefers leaner ground and good air circulation.

Traditional & herbal uses: Southernwood has a long tradition of use for supporting digestion and liver function. It has also been referenced historically for aromatic applications related to menstrual flow and in folk contexts for expelling parasitic worms. The fragrant aerial parts are the portion most often referred to in historical herbal practice.

Maintenance & harvesting: Prune the plant in late winter or early spring, cutting it back to roughly 20 cm while dormant to encourage dense, healthy regrowth. Light trimming through the growing season helps maintain shape and prevents the stems becoming overly woody. Harvest aerial parts throughout summer when the foliage is most aromatic, taking care not to strip the plant too heavily at once. Southernwood benefits from periodic renewal—cutting back older stems and allowing fresh shoots to dominate keeps the plant compact and vigorous.
