Alchemilla vulgaris plant

Alchemilla vulgaris (Lady's Mantle) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
A hardy perennial forming soft, pleated fan-shaped leaves that hold sparkling droplets after rain, with airy sprays of yellow-green flowers; traditionally valued for women’s health and gentle astringent effects.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Alchemilla vulgaris forms a low mound of beautifully pleated, velvety leaves that fan out in rounded lobes, each leaf catching and holding dew like bright silver beads. This distinctive feature has made the plant famous in European folklore and one of the most recognisable herbs in traditional gardens. In early summer it lifts delicate clouds of tiny yellow-green flowers on branching stems, creating a soft haze above the foliage. These fine blooms are lightly visited by bees and small pollinating insects while the dense leaves offer excellent ground-cover.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy across Ireland, this long-lived perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Tolerating damp summers and light shade beneath shrubs or open woodland settings. Supplied in a 9 cm pot, it can be planted out once the ground is workable and will quickly settle into a neat, spreading clump.

Traditional & herbal uses: Lady’s mantle has deep roots in Irish herbalism, especially for its traditional association with menstrual disorders, heavy bleeding, and general astringent applications. The aerial parts, harvested in full flower, were historically used for digestive upsets and to support tissue tone in a variety of external and internal preparations.

Maintenance & harvesting: Cut back flowering stems after the first flush to encourage a tidier mound and potential repeat flowering. Older clumps can be divided in spring or autumn to maintain vigour or increase stock. Harvest the aerial parts during peak bloom when essential constituents are strongest. A light mulch in spring helps maintain soil moisture, while removing tired leaves keeps the plant looking fresh throughout the growing season. After the first frosts, foliage can be trimmed back to allow clean new growth the following year.
