Agrimonia eupatoria (Agrimony) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A hardy perennial with slender yellow flower spikes and softly aromatic, toothed leaves, valued traditionally for digestive support and gentle astringent action in herbal practice.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Agrimonia eupatoria forms an upright clump of softly hairy, pinnate leaves made up of many toothed leaflets that give the plant a textured, almost fern-like appearance. Through midsummer it sends up elegant, elongated spikes of bright yellow, five-petalled flowers, each releasing a light, pleasant scent. These airy floral wands are rich in pollen and nectar, attracting bees and hoverflies throughout their flowering period. As the blooms fade, they form hooked seed burrs that cling lightly to fur or clothing—one of the plant’s characteristic identification features.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy in Ireland, agrimony thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soil. As a **native Irish and European** species, it adapts extremely well to local conditions and is tolerant of poorer soils, grassy margins and light meadow-style planting. Supplied in a 9 cm pot, it can be planted out once the risk of hard frost has passed, quickly establishing a resilient, long-lived clump.

Traditional & herbal uses: Agrimony has a long history in European herbalism for its gentle astringent qualities. It has been used traditionally for diarrhoea, digestive discomfort, minor bleeding and external wound care, reflecting its tannin-rich composition. The leaves and flowering tops are the parts most commonly referenced in historic herbal texts.

Maintenance & harvesting: Agrimony is low-maintenance: cut back old stems in winter to tidy the crown, and divide established clumps every few years in spring to maintain vigour. Harvest leaves and flowering tops in midsummer when aroma and colour are strongest. Removing spent flower spikes can extend blooming, though leaving a few allows seed burrs to form if you wish to collect seed. Ensure soil does not become waterlogged during sustained wet periods, and provide a light mulch in spring to support healthy regrowth.
