Lysimachia nummularia plant

Lysimachia nummularia (Creeping jenny) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A vigorous, low-growing perennial forming golden-green trailing mats, ideal for damp soils in Ireland. Traditionally valued for wound healing and now investigated for anti-inflammatory and tissue-repair properties. Hardy, fast spreading, and easy to establish.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: A ground-hugging perennial with rounded, coin-like leaves forming dense, luminous green carpets that trail over soil, stone or containers. Its creeping stems root readily at nodes, creating a lush, moisture-retentive mat. The plant produces delicate yellow flowers in summer, adding contrast to the foliage while maintaining its characteristic glossy texture.

Growing conditions: This hardy species thrives in Ireland’s cool, damp climate and is native to parts of Europe including Ireland. It performs best in moist but free-draining soil, in full sun to partial shade. Due to its spreading habit, it establishes quickly and can be grown at ground level or in hanging baskets where its trailing form is especially attractive. Once planted, it is resilient, long-lived, and well suited to year-round outdoor cultivation.

Traditional & herbal uses: Contemporary herbal literature and emerging pharmacological studies highlight its potential anti-inflammatory and astringent actions, particularly in the context of minor wounds, skin irritation and superficial tissue repair. Its diuretic properties are of current interest for urinary gravel and related complaints, aligning with its historic associations with urinary stones and mild gallbladder congestion, though evidence remains preliminary.

Maintenance & harvesting: Keep growth in check by trimming runners during the growing season, especially in fertile or damp soils where it spreads rapidly. Plants grown in hanging baskets require occasional thinning to maintain airflow and shape. Harvest aerial parts during active growth for fresh use or drying. Once established, it requires minimal intervention aside from periodic cutting back to prevent excessive spread.
