Hierochloe odorata or Sweet grass plant in 9cm pot

Hierochloe odorata (Sweet grass) 9 cm pot

€ 7.00
A fragrant, hardy perennial with ribbon-like leaves releasing a sweet vanilla aroma when dried. Grown in our Co. Clare nursery and well suited to Irish gardens
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Sweet Grass forms graceful, arching mats of narrow, bright-green leaves that carry a distinctive vanilla-like fragrance, especially when dried or gently crushed. Its slender flowering stems rise above the foliage in early summer, creating a soft, meadow-like presence. The plant spreads steadily by rhizomes, forming aromatic clumps that are both ornamental and traditionally valued.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy and well-adapted to Irish weather, Sweet Grass thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Because it is naturally found in northern climates, it tolerates cool summers and wet winters very well. Plants transplant easily and establish quickly once placed in open ground or along meadow edges.

Traditional & herbal uses: Historically valued for its soothing aromatic qualities, Sweet Grass has long been dried for smudging, gentle respiratory support, and ceremonial uses. It has been associated with easing coughs, sore throats, fevers, and aiding postpartum placental release in some traditional contexts.

Maintenance & harvesting: Cut established clumps in midsummer when the leaves contain the strongest fragrance; drying enhances the sweet aroma. Divide mature plants every few years to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding. Because this species spreads by underground rhizomes, edging or periodic lifting can help control expansion if space is limited.
