Angelica sinensis plant at Ivywood

Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) 9 cm Pot

€ 7.00
A tall aromatic perennial with finely divided leaves and rounded umbels of creamy flowers, traditionally valued for menstrual support, circulation and general vitality.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Angelica sinensis forms a leafy crown of bright green, finely divided, aromatic foliage, each leaf composed of delicately serrated leaflets that create a soft, lace-like texture. Mature plants reach around 80 cm, sending up sturdy stems topped with broad, creamy-white umbels typical of the Apiaceae family. These rounded flower clusters attract a range of nectar-feeding insects, giving the plant both ornamental and ecological value. Its elegant shape, warm aroma, and airy umbels make Dong Quai a distinctive presence in herb beds.

Growing conditions: Although fully hardy in the Irish climate, Angelica sinensis prefers a sheltered position with **full shade or deep dappled shade**, mirroring the cool, moist woodland edges of its native Asian habitat. It performs best in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil and will appreciate consistent watering during dry periods. Supplied in a 9 cm pot, it should be planted out into deep, prepared ground and allowed to form a steady clump. Plants may self-seed lightly; young seedlings can be lifted and potted on.

Traditional & herbal uses: Dong Quai has a long history in traditional East Asian herbalism, where the root is associated with menstrual balance, circulatory support and general vitality. It has also been referenced in relation to fatigue and anaemia in folk practice. The root is the most valued part of the plant and is normally harvested only after the plant is well established.

Maintenance & harvesting: Keep soil consistently moist and mulch annually with compost or leaf mould to maintain the cool, humus-rich environment the plant prefers. Remove spent flower stems to encourage stronger root development unless you wish to allow seed set. Roots are harvested from plants over two years old, ideally in late autumn after the foliage has died back. Protect young plants from slugs and snails, particularly in spring. If clumps become congested over time, thin seedlings rather than dividing mature roots, as intact root systems tend to perform best.
