Origanum vulgare plant at Ivywood

Origanum vulgare (Oregano) 9 cm Pot

€ 4.00
Origanum vulgare (Oregano) – a hardy, aromatic perennial. Traditionally valued for respiratory and digestive complaints, and well suited to Irish gardens.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Origanum vulgare is a compact, strongly aromatic perennial forming tight clumps of branching reddish-green stems topped with soft, oval, oil-rich leaves. In midsummer it produces rounded heads of pinkish-purple florets that attract bees and hoverflies. Plants grown in our Co. Clare nursery develop a dense, woody crown over time, giving reliable structure and excellent longevity in Irish herb gardens.

Growing conditions:This is a fully hardy perennial native to Ireland and Europe, adapting exceptionally well to our cool, damp maritime climate. It prefers full sun and a free-draining soil; gravelly or limestoney substrates enhance leaf aroma. In wetter counties, including Clare, raised beds or the sunniest section of the garden help prevent winter root saturation. Once established, oregano tolerates dry spells and thrives in herb borders, pots, or mixed medicinal beds.

Traditional & herbal uses:Origanum vulgare has a long ethnobotanical history as an aromatic herb used for respiratory tract infections, including congestive coughs, seasonal colds, and flu. Modern phytochemical studies highlight its essential oils—particularly carvacrol and thymol—which demonstrate antimicrobial and antifungal activity relevant to Candida overgrowth. Traditional European practice also used oregano for digestive cramps, sluggish digestion, and gas. The aromatic leaves have been used in culinary and herbal preparations to support the respiratory and digestive systems while also providing warming and stimulating qualities.

Maintenance & harvesting:Plants grown in Ireland establish quickly from divisions or cuttings. Remove spent flowering stems to encourage new leafy growth and prevent self-seeding. Harvest aerial parts just as the flower buds open—this is when essential oil concentration is highest. In heavier soils, top-dress with gravel or composted bark to improve drainage. Cut plants back after flowering to maintain compact form. As with all aromatic herbs, avoid overwatering and ensure good air circulation around the crown.
