Echinacea purpurea plant at Ivywood

Echinacea purpurea (Echinacea) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A robust, long-flowering perennial producing bold purple-petalled heads with a prominent copper cone. Excellent wildlife value and a dependable medicinal species for Irish gardens.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Echinacea purpurea forms a sturdy clump of upright stems topped with striking purple ray florets surrounding a raised, copper-orange central cone. The coarse, lanceolate leaves create a strong basal mass, while summer flowering attracts bees and butterflies for months. Mature plants develop a thick, fibrous root system and reliably return each year under Irish conditions.

Growing conditions: Performs best in full sun and free-draining soil that doesn’t stay waterlogged in winter. In Ireland’s cooler, wetter climate, give it an open, bright position and avoid heavy clay pockets. As a hardy North American perennial, it overwinters outdoors with no protection once established. Plant out in spring or early autumn for strongest root establishment.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally valued as an immune-supporting herb, with long-standing use in preparations for respiratory issues, seasonal infections, and general immune resilience. Flowers and aerial parts are typically harvested during peak bloom, while older roots are also collected in some traditions.

Maintenance & harvesting: Deadhead spent flowers to prolong flowering or leave some cones to feed finches through winter. Cut stems back to the crown after die-back. Harvest aerial parts when fully flowering, selecting vigorous stems. Roots are usually taken from well-established plants (3+ years). Keep the area weed-free in spring and the first year, as young plants can be slower to bulk up in Irish soils and also to discourage slugs to hide out and eat your early spring shoots!.
