Berberis vulgaris plant from Ivywood

Berberis vulgaris (Barberry) 9 cm Pot

€ 8.00
A hardy deciduous shrub with bright yellow roots and vivid red berries, traditionally valued for liver and gallbladder support. Well suited to Irish gardens.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Berberis vulgaris, or Barberry, forms a dense, thorny shrub with small oval leaves that turn striking shades of orange and red in autumn. In spring it produces pendulous clusters of soft yellow flowers that attract early pollinators, followed later by bright red berries that add strong ornamental impact. Its yellow-stained roots and colourful seasonal changes give it long-lasting visual interest.

Growing conditions: Barberry is fully hardy in the Irish climate and copes well with both full sun and partial shade. It tolerates exposed sites, cold winters, and a range of soil types, provided drainage is good. Mulching with compost helps maintain moisture and encourages strong root development. This is a vigorous and reliable shrub for Irish gardens, hedging, or mixed borders.

Traditional & herbal uses: Barberry has a long record of traditional use for gallbladder congestion, gallstones, and sluggish liver function. It has also been used historically for hepatitis, chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, and digestive infections including amoebic dysentery. Its strong bitter qualities have deep roots in European herbal practice.

Maintenance & harvesting: Minimal care is required aside from occasional pruning to maintain shape and access, as the shrub can become dense and thorny. Apply compost mulch annually to support healthy growth. Roots are traditionally harvested from mature plants, while berries can be collected in autumn for syrup-making or drying. Avoid heavy pruning during severe cold spells.
