Description

Growth habit & appearance: Jiao-gu-lan forms a graceful, climbing mass of fine, five-parted leaves with a bright green sheen, creating an intricate lacework of foliage along any support it encounters. Originating from the warm, humid slopes of China and neighbouring parts of East Asia, it produces slender tendrils and soft stems that can reach two metres or more when given shelter. Its foliage is the main visual appeal, forming a lush, medicinally valued canopy throughout the growing season.

Growing conditions: In Ireland, this tender perennial requires protection from cold winds and frost. A polytunnel, greenhouse, or a warm south-facing walled garden offers the best microclimate. It prefers part shade with consistent warmth, thriving in humus-rich, moist but freely draining soil. Because it is not winter-hardy outdoors here, it should be considered an over-wintering plant that must be protected from low temperatures.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally used as a tonic herb in East Asian systems, Jiao-gu-lan is associated with supporting healthy cholesterol levels and combating tiredness. It is also noted for its historical connection with immune support through maintaining white blood cell activity. Only leaves are typically collected for use.

Maintenance & harvesting: Provide vertical support and allow the plant to climb freely through summer. Regular trimming encourages bushier growth. Harvest leaves during the warm months, choosing tender young foliage for the highest quality. Keep plants sheltered over winter—either by cutting back and overwintering in a polytunnel or bringing potted specimens indoors. Maintain evenly moist soil and apply compost mulch in spring. Monitor vigour and prune to prevent excessive tangling.
