Oenothera biennis

Oenothera biennis (Evening Primrose) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A hardy biennial with tall yellow evening-blooming flowers, traditionally valued for soothing and calming uses. Grown from seed in our Co. Clare nursery.
Description

Growth habit & appearance:Oenothera biennis forms an upright biennial rosette in year one before sending up tall, slender flowering stems in year two. Its luminous yellow blooms open at dusk, giving the plant a distinctive twilight presence. Leaves are lanceolate with a slightly coarse texture, and the whole plant carries the characteristic evening-primrose fragrance. All plants are seed-grown here in our Co. Clare nursery.

Growing conditions:This hardy biennial performs reliably in the Irish climate, thriving in full sun and freely draining soil. It tolerates coastal winds and lean soil, making it a robust option for Irish gardeners. Once established outdoors, it overwinters naturally and completes its life cycle in the second year. As a European native, it integrates well into Irish wildlife-friendly gardens.

Traditional & herbal uses:Historically used as a gentle sedative, evening primrose has also been noted for applications in whooping cough, mild respiratory irritation, and inflammatory skin presentations such as eczema. Modern phytochemical analyses highlight gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in the seeds, which has attracted research interest for dermatological and inflammatory pathways. Contemporary trials explore its role in skin barrier function, menstrual comfort, and systemic inflammation.

Maintenance & harvesting:This species is low maintenance: simply plant out, allow the basal rosette to establish, and keep weeds from smothering it during its first year. Harvest the flowers in year two as they open. Allowing some seed heads to mature will enable self-seeding for future plants. Cut back remaining stems after die-back to tidy the area.
