Back Mitcham Peppermint is a richly aromatic, vigorous hardy perennial mint grown at Ivywood in Co. Clare, valued for its intense essential-oil profile, deep purple-tinged stems, and exceptional quality for teas and distillation.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Mentha × piperita var. ‘Black Mitcham’ is a highly aromatic peppermint cultivar distinguished by its dark, purple-flushed stems and strongly scented foliage. Leaves are slender, sharply toothed and rich in menthol-bearing essential oils, giving the plant a sharper, deeper fragrance than standard peppermint varieties. As a vigorous clonal hybrid, it forms dense stands through creeping rhizomes, creating a full, lush visual presence in any herb bed or container.

Growing conditions: As a hardy perennial and well suited to Irish growing conditions, Black Mitcham thrives in full sun with moist, fertile soil. In Ireland’s humid, mild climate it performs exceptionally well, but its spreading nature means it is best contained in a pot or confined bed. Plants grown at our nursery in Co. Clare are propagated from high-quality stock, ensuring strong growth and winter resilience. Like all mints, it overwinters reliably outdoors and re-emerges vigorously each spring.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally used for digestive discomfort, bloating, nausea, and colic, Black Mitcham is prized for its elevated essential-oil content. The aromatic leaves are also used for easing mild fevers, soothing irritated airways, freshening the breath, and supporting general digestive comfort. This variety is widely chosen for tea blends due to its powerful menthol notes, and it is the preferred cultivar for distilling peppermint essential oil and hydrosols. Its aromatic profile also makes it useful for mild tension headaches when inhaled or applied via steam preparations.

Maintenance & harvesting: Cuttings root readily, making it easy to expand stock or share plants. Because this mint spreads aggressively, keep it in a container unless naturalising is desired. Harvest leaves throughout summer before flowering for peak flavour and essential-oil yield. Remove old stems in late winter and top-dress with compost to encourage fresh spring growth.
