Hyoscyamus niger at Ivywood

Hyoscyamus niger (Henbane) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A striking annual with mottled purple-veined flowers and soft, grey-felted leaves. Grown from seed in our Co. Clare nursery, this toxic species is used traditionally for its analgesic and antispasmodic properties.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Hyoscyamus niger is a strongly aromatic annual with soft, downy foliage and tall, upright stems carrying distinctive yellow-cream flowers flushed with dark purple venation. The plant forms a loose, sculptural silhouette through the season, its unusual colouring and strong scent giving it an unmistakable presence in the garden.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy in Ireland and well suited to our climate, this native European annual thrives in open, sun-exposed positions with free-draining soil. Plants benefit from a sheltered location to reduce stem lodging in windy coastal areas. Sow directly or transplant young nursery plants outdoors in spring once frosts have passed.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally employed as a potent analgesic and sedative, and historically used for muscular spasm and certain respiratory complaints. The plant is toxic and not used internally in modern herbal practice, but remains of ethnobotanical interest.

Maintenance & harvesting: As a true annual, Henbane completes its life cycle within one season. Keep soil moderately fertile and avoid over-watering to maintain sturdy stems. Harvest whole aerial parts at peak flowering if required for drying. Allow a few mature plants to set seed if future propagation is desired; seed ripens reliably in Irish summers. Handle with care and avoid prolonged skin contact.
