Galega officinalis plant

Galega officinalis (Goats rue) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A tall, graceful perennial with pea-like lilac blooms and fine pinnate foliage, forming elegant clumps that bring soft movement and colour to herbaceous borders.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Galega officinalis, known as Goat’s Rue, forms upright clumps of finely divided pinnate leaves that give the plant a delicate, feathery texture. Slender stems carry loose spikes of soft lilac to pale purple pea-flowers through summer, creating an airy and ornamental display. Its combination of height and lightness makes it a striking structural herb for both cottage and medicinal gardens.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy in Ireland, Goat’s Rue grows well in part shade to full sun, though slightly sheltered positions help prevent wind-rock on taller stems. It tolerates most Irish soils, including heavier ground, provided drainage is reasonable. Established plants cope well with damp, cool summers typical of the west of Ireland.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally associated with supporting breast milk flow and with folk use in reducing blood sugar levels. Its flowering aerial parts have been harvested historically for various preparations.

Maintenance & harvesting: A robust but manageable perennial requiring little intervention beyond seasonal tidy-up. Cut back spent stems in late winter or early spring to encourage a strong new flush. Harvest aerial parts when the plant is in full flower. Plants may gently self-seed, so remove seed heads if you prefer tighter control. Mature clumps can be divided every few years to maintain vigour and shape.
