Tarragon plant at Ivywood

Artemisia dracunuculus (Russian tarragon) 9 cm Pot

€ 7.00
A slender aromatic perennial with narrow green leaves, traditionally valued for stimulating digestion and offering mild calming qualities.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Artemisia dracunculus forms a light, upright clump of slender green stems lined with long, narrow, aromatic leaves. The foliage has a delicate, slightly glossy texture and releases a subtle herbal scent when handled. In summer, the plant produces small, understated flower clusters, though it is primarily grown for its graceful foliage rather than its blooms. Its airy, upright growth makes Russian tarragon a visually pleasing addition to herb beds, lending fine texture and movement in even a light breeze.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy in the Irish climate, Russian tarragon thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It originates from continental Europe, where summers are dry and bright, so good drainage is essential for strong growth in Ireland’s wetter conditions. Supplied in a 9 cm pot, it should be planted out into open ground or a raised bed. This species forms a low to mid-height clump and responds well to warm, sheltered spots.

Traditional & herbal uses: Traditionally, Artemisia dracunculus has been associated with stimulating digestion, supporting a comfortable stomach and offering mild calming effects. Its aromatic leaves have long been used in culinary and herbal traditions for flavour and digestive balance.

Maintenance & harvesting: Trim the plant lightly through the growing season to encourage fresh foliage and prevent the stems becoming leggy. Cut back fully in late autumn or early spring to promote dense new growth. Harvest leaves as needed throughout summer, choosing young shoots for the best flavour and aromatic quality. Avoid waterlogged soil in winter to protect the root system, and consider occasional division every few years if the clump becomes congested.
