Ajuga reptans plant

Ajuga reptans (Bugle) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
Grown from Ivywood woodland cuttings. A low-growing native perennial with glossy, dark-tinted leaves and rich blue flower spikes, traditionally valued for wound care and gentle soothing actions.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Ajuga reptans forms a dense, spreading mat of glossy, rounded-to-oval leaves that may display deep green, bronze or purplish tones depending on light levels. In mid- to late spring it sends up short but striking flower spikes packed with vivid blue, two-lipped blossoms typical of the mint family. These nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, particularly bumblebees emerging early in the season, making the plant an excellent groundcover for pollinator-friendly areas. Its creeping stems root as they travel, creating a seamless carpet of foliage and colour.

Growing conditions: Fully hardy in the Irish climate, this **native Irish and European** species thrives in part sun to light shade and prefers moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It will tolerate heavier soils and can adapt to a wide range of garden conditions, from the edges of lawns to woodland clearings. Supplied in a 9 cm pot, Ajuga establishes quickly, especially when planted out after the last frosts and kept evenly moist during its initial rooting phase. Our Ajuga has come from our most ancient parts of our rainforest woodland and carefully divided at the nursery, a truely magical plant.

Traditional & herbal uses: Historically known for its use in wound healing, burns, mild pain relief and gentle laxative preparations, bugle has a long-standing presence in European folk medicine. The aerial parts, particularly the flowering tops, were the most referenced components in traditional herbal texts.

Maintenance & harvesting: Ajuga is easy to manage: divide established patches every few years in spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding. Keep the soil consistently moist during extended dry weather, as shallow roots can dry out quickly. Remove spent flower spikes to tidy the mat and encourage fresh leaf growth, or leave a few if you want seed to form. Trim back any overly invasive runners if you wish to keep the plant contained. A light mulch of leaf mould in spring helps maintain the moisture-rich, humus-bearing conditions this species prefers.
