Aconite plant at Ivywood botanicals

Aconitum napellus (Monkshood) 9 cm Pot

€ 6.00
A striking herbaceous perennial with deep violet hooded flowers and divided foliage, grown with care for its traditional external uses and dramatic late-summer display.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: Aconitum napellus forms upright clumps of finely divided, dark green leaves that create a layered, almost fern-like texture. In mid- to late summer it produces tall flowering spikes of intense violet-blue, helmet-shaped blooms—one of the most distinctive floral forms in European herbaceous plants. These hooded flowers are rich in nectar and attract long-tongued bees and other pollinating insects, although all parts of the plant remain highly toxic to touch or ingest.

Growing conditions: This species is fully hardy in the Irish climate, thriving in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil and benefits from being kept cool at the root, making it well suited to north- or east-facing borders. As a European native, it adapts readily to Irish garden soils and weather patterns. Supplied in a 9 cm pot, it should be planted out promptly and given space to form a stable clump in its second year of growth.

Traditional & herbal uses: Historically, Aconitum species were used only externally and with extreme caution for bruises and neuralgic discomfort. Modern herbal practice avoids internal use entirely due to the plant’s potent alkaloids, and it remains valued primarily for historical reference rather than contemporary application.

Maintenance & harvesting: Handle the plant only with gloves, as sap can be absorbed through the skin. Cut back spent flowering stems after blooming to encourage a tidier form and reduce risk of self-seeding. Keep soil evenly moist in dry spells, applying mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. When dividing mature clumps—typically every few years—use gloves and wash tools immediately after handling. Ensure pets and children do not have access to the plant. In winter, old stems die back naturally and can be removed to prepare for fresh growth in spring.
