Achyranthes bidentata (Ox-Knee) 9 cm Pot

€ 5.00
A half-hardy perennial herb with upright stems and subtle greenish flower spikes, grown for its traditional support of menstrual wellness and muscle tension.
Description

Growth habit & appearance: This upright herb reaches around 80 cm tall, with slightly angular, branching stems and opposite, elliptic-lanceolate leaves that sometimes show a reddish cast at the stem base. In summer the plant produces slender terminal spikes of tiny greenish-yellow flowers, giving a refined, airy texture to the plant. Though not flashy in colour, the elegant form and delicate spire-like blooms add subtle structure to garden beds and draw in small pollinating insects.

Growing conditions: As a half-hardy perennial native to temperate and subtropical Asia, it should be treated in Ireland either in a greenhouse or as an annual outdoors unless given winter protection. It requires full sun and a fertile, well-drained soil, and will perform best if sheltered from severe frost. Supplied in a 9 cm pot, it is well suited to containers, light beds or mixed herb-planting schemes.

Traditional & herbal uses: The root of Achyranthes bidentata is used in East Asian herbal medicine to support blood circulation, ease muscular discomfort and assist menstrual irregularities such as amenorrhea. Contemporary studies indicate anti-inflammatory and circulatory effects, reflecting its long-standing use.

Maintenance & harvesting: Keep plants in full sun and ensure the soil remains moist but not water logged; reduce watering before overwintering. Pinch or trim stems lightly in early summer to encourage bushier growth. Harvest leaves and flower spikes in midsummer when fully developed, and lift roots in autumn if overwintering indoors. Cut back stems after flowering to tidy the plant and reduce risk of fungal issues during damp Irish winters.
