Herbs For Adrenal Exhaustion

One of the most common things I see in clinic is adrenal fatigue. Many people are unaware that their adrenals need attention and they continue to push themselves until symptoms worsen. Here are some typical signs and symptoms.
Fatigue that is constant, weakness, lack of motivation, fainting or dizzy spells, low blood pressure, mood swings, nervousness, anxiety, depression, irritability, headaches, palpitations, insomnia, low immunity and cravings - usually sugar, salt or stimulants.
Adrenal fatigue can be caused by stress, poor sleep habits, blood sugar imbalance and nutrient deficiencies, especially Vitamin C and the B vitamins. As herbalists and naturopaths we use herbal medicines alongside nutritional therapy to restore adrenal function.

There are numerous herbs that remedy adrenal fatigue depending on the cause and constitution of the person. Understanding adrenal fatigue in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda gives us a deeper insight into the underlying issues. Some of these are western herbs and some Chinese, Siberian and Indian plants. We prefer to use the plants we grow here in Sligo so we know we are using the best quality medicines. These are some of my favourite herbs to grow and use in clinic to support the adrenals and boost energy.
Avena spp. - Oats
Withania somniferun - Ashwagandha
Astragalus membranaceus - Milk vetch
Glycyrrhiza spp. - Licorice
Angelica sinensis - Chinese Angelica
Rhodiola rosea - Roseroot
Stemmacantha carthamoides - Maral
Codonopsis pilosula – Dang shen
Gynostemma pentaphyllum - Jiaogulan

When we use these kind of tonics in herbal formulas we combine them with a mix of other herbs to suit the individual and their needs. Other herbs would include nervine relaxants, circulatory stimulants, carminative herbs, diuretics and herbs to support liver function.
